WESTERN MOUNTAIN WOODTURNERS JED MALCORE DEMONSTRATES CORING.
We’re in for a treat at our next meeting on Wednesday, January 8th when one of our own comes to the lathe after completing the 2019 Craft Apprentice Program. Jed Malcore teamed up with Kim Dailey to complete 100+ hours of one on one instruction. The program is funded by the Maine Crafts Association in partnership with the Arts Commission and consists of five paired master and apprentice teams. Kim and Jed were the only woodturning team last year. This phenomenal program allowed them the chance to really get into a lot of aspects of woodturning that you normally don’t get into with just a few hours of turning time. It will be fun to hear about their experiences, like Jed starting off with a broken thumb, and to hear what pearls of wisdom he learned from our own master and guru Kim Dailey.
Bring in what you have been working on for Show and Tell and we will also have our famous Wood Raffle.
And remember if school is cancelled for RSU#56, then we are also cancelled.

Meeting November 13, 2019

WESTERN MOUNTAIN WOODTURNERS

Join us this Wednesday, November 13th when Doug Timberlake will be our demonstrator. Doug is an accomplished woodturner and has learned several new decorative embellishing techniques that we have seen on some of his show and tell items. Word has it that his demo may be of a birdhouse ornament with a burned/carved bark roof.

Please bring in whatever you have been working on for our Show and Tell and remember that it doesn’t have be a masterpiece. We often learn more from our mistakes and revisions along the way. Sharing that “learning curve” helps everyone.

We will also have our famous Wood Raffle.

Wednesday, December 11 will be our annual Pot Luck Christmas Party. Please bring a main dish or dessert to share as well as a serving utensil if needed. Plates and silverware, etc. will be provided as well as soft drinks and coffee. Our Yankee Swap Gift Exchange is always a favorite especially with handmade items (preferable made by you).

Our January 8th meeting has Jed Malcore tentatively scheduled to show us what he has learned from his apprenticeship with Kim Dailey when they were chosen as one of five teams (and the only woodturners) in the 2019 Maine Craft Apprentice Program (CAP). It will be fun to hear Jed and Kim talk about this.

In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you this Wednesday with Doug Timberlake!

As always, if school at RSU #56 in cancelled, we are cancelled.

WESTERN MOUNTAIN WOODTURNERS

Summer is about over and as we start into fall it’s time to get back into our shops and make shavings again. Join us from 6-9pm on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at the Dirigo High School woodshop. After some uncertainty we will continue to meet at out current location for the foreseeable future.

Steve Hatch will be our demonstrator for the evening. Not sure exactly what he has planned but it’s always an adventure with Steve. We’d also like to have members bring in any Tips and Tricks that they have discovered.

I know one member who has had a busy summer (actually two members) as Jed Malcore and Kim Dailey were chosen as one of five teams to participate in the 2019 Maine Craft Apprentice Program (CAP). From the pictures that have been appearing on Facebook it looks like Jed’s turning has progressed remarkably and I’m hoping that Jed will bring in some of his recent turnings. (Also hoping for a future demo where he talks about the program and his apprenticeship and shares some of those pearls of wisdom from Kim.)

Our Show and Tell will be a great opportunity for everyone to see what you have been doing and remember that it’s not just for our masterpieces. We learn as much (or more) from things that didn’t go as planned. We’ll also have our famous Wood Raffle.

Our next meeting on October 9th will feature Peter Walen.

COME CELEBRATE THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF WESTERN MOUNTAIN WOODTURNERS ASSOCIATION

Our next meeting is Wednesday, May 8th at 6pm at the Dirigo High school woodshop.

We‘ve had a request for more Question and Answer time so our next meeting will be a round table discussion about current (or older favorite) projects of our members. Bring in something that you are working on or a finished project. We’ll talk about how it was made, what problems you ran into making it and what decisions you had to make along the way. It might include how to hold it on the lathe, how to finish the bottom, hollowing, embellishments if any, or what finish to use.

Bring in your project(s) or idea(s) for a piece and help everyone understand how it was made. Bring along any questions you might have about any aspect of turning and we can all build on what we know. You might also bring in a project that didn’t work (or blew up?). We often learn more from our failures than from our successes.

Also, we’ve had a club challenge suggestion to bring in an embellished egg. Any size, any embellishment. It might be turned decoration, paint, woodburning, inlay or whatever else you can think up.

This will be a kind of expanded Show and Tell but we will also have our usual Wood Raffle. See you then!
